Keystone Games to continue despite budget woes
Despite budget concerns and a sagging economy, organizers of the 2009 Keystone State Games are optimistic the event will be a success once again.
Still, Keystone Games CEO Owen Costello has already had to make tough decisions regarding sports and venues for this year’s competition, which runs through Aug. 2.
Previous Keystone sports like golf, disc golf, table tennis, beach volleyball, beach wrestling, twirling, female lacrosse, shooting and sled hockey were all eliminated from this year’s schedule.
However, Costello said that canceling some sports was as much because of a lack of participants as fiscal reasons.
“There is just hit and miss with the sports,” he said. “Table tennis is a great sport, (but) last year our numbers were low and it cost me more to run that event than the numbers (would allow).”
